Man's Fall Into Sin
“Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?” Genesis 3:1
Most people who know the Lord Jesus Christ and read the Bible are very aware of what is meant when we talk about “original sin.” This scripture shows us this encounter Eve has with Satan, which ultimately ends in what we know of as the fall of man.
Man was placed in the garden to serve God and to fellowship with Him. What a great plan God had for man. But when Adam chose Satan’s plan, because of what his wife Eve had started, unfortunately everything was changed forever. Now for six thousand years man and creation has been groaning.
Romans 8:22 For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.
When God created Adam, he gave him complete control of everything, with only one exception. God told Adam, not to eat of the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Knowing he should not eat from this tree he ate of it anyway. From this one act of rebellion and disobedience we all suffer the consequences of death. Suddenly a drastic change took place, and Adam became a fearful sinner and was naked before God.
The Relationship Between Satan and Man
Satan is not good, he not only does not love anyone, but he HATES everyone. He is every man’s enemy, and his goal is to keep you away from the Lord. One ohis most effective ways of keeping people from getting saved and away from God is to offer them the things of the world. Satan especially loves to do this with people who are saved, and sadly many fall into this trap of loving the things of the world more than they do God. In turn, this greatly affects the lives of many Christians. But remember the Lord said,
Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever. 1 John 2:15‑17
What Jesus Said About What Satan is Doing:
Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. Matthew 6:19‑21
What the Apostle Paul said Satan Was Doing:
But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. 2 Corinthians 4:3‑4
Lost man has no desire to come to God. Man feels no need for God. God is a stranger to lost man and Satan does not want lost man to learn of God, nor to know God. He works to keep people from the Bible, and from a Bible church. However, Satan does not care if man has religion. My friend, even Satan is smart enough to know religion is NOT a relationship with God!
Satan Controls Man Until He is Saved:
Ephesians 2:1-2 “And you hath he made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins; In which in times past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the sons of disobedience;”
Lost man seldom desires to live morally, or properly, although there are those exceptions where some do desire to come to God but think they can do it under the power of their own works. This may be the worst of all the unrealistic things some think as ways to God.
Only God Can Save Colossians 1:13,
“Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son;”
This verse shows the power of darkness, which is the lost man’s plight, yet reveals the grace of God to deliver us by the power of the gospel.
Believers Belong to God
1 John 5:19, “And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.”
Because the lost are the way they are they will lie to you, cheat you and curse you over seemly nothing. Consider how businesses lie about their products. Once saved, as a Christian grows, they desire & strive not to have this kind of behavior.
The condition of lost man is often termed the Total Depravity of man. Why, because man can do nothing to reach God. By depravity we mean man’s want of original righteousness and the corruption of his moral nature and his bent toward evil. The Apostle Paul said it like this,
For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. Romans 7:18
Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: Ephesians 4:18
Think about the simple test God gave Adam. The only restriction given to Adam was to not eat from the tree in the midst of the garden.
This test was composed of two parts:
The command not to eat the fruit in Genesis 2:17, and the temptation by Satan in Genesis 3:1. God placed this test before Adam and Eve so that they could have the choice between good and evil.
Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him. James 1:12
When God created the angels, he gave them the choice to obey or disobey. God did the same with Adam and Eve, they could obey or disobey him. God does not create beings that must follow Him blindly, but beings that have the moral choice to follow or reject him. God wants us to choose to love and obey him.
The Devil used several tactics in his temptation:
1-In Genesis 3:1 Satan asked Eve if God said, “Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?”
2-Satan denied God’s word (3:4). “Ye shall not surely die;”
3-Satan in Gen. 3:5 indicated that God was covering up something, to keep them from being like God.
4-Satan promised personal benefit would come with their disobedience (3:5). They would be as God.
What a falsehood. How can a created being be as the Creator? Satan was appealing to the beauty of things.
He also promised things that were desirable. There was nothing magical in the fruit, to give them the knowledge of good and evil. They knew of good and evil once they ate. It was the act of disobedience, rather than the fruit itself that was the act of sin.
There were a number of consequences that came with the fall:
*Man was condemned by his own conscience. He hid in shame and guilt. They knew they had done wrong. They had become sinners.
*As a result, the serpent was to crawl on the belly and eat dust (Gen. 3:14,15).
*Satan was to fall by the seed of the woman (Gen. 3:15)
*The woman was to have pain in travail, and she was to be subjected to her husband (Gen. 3:16).
*The man was to find that the environment would be against him (Gen. 3:17-19).
*The man & woman together were to suffer from spiritual and physical death & be expelled from the garden.
Mankind to come was to suffer as well, not that they did anything wrong, but that in Adam they sinned.
Sin resulted in three types of death.
There came upon man physical, spiritual, and eternal death in one act of disobedience.
*Physical death is the separation of the soul and spirit from the body.
*Spiritual death is the separation of the soul and spirit from God.
*Eternal death is the separation of the soul and spirit from God eternally.
It involves eternal torment as well!
This eternal separation and torment are also called the second death in Revelation 20:14; 21:8.
Some might wonder what the difference is between spiritual death and eternal death?
The basic difference is the length of time:
*The spiritual death is in this life (a period of years), while eternal death is for all of eternity.
*The spiritual death becomes eternal death at the point of physical death.
*There is little difference between spiritual and eternal, for spiritual becomes eternal.
*The distinction is that spiritual death may be overcome in this life by salvation. “Praise the Lord”
*Eternal death is permanent and cannot be overcome in the next life.
*Spiritual death would portray the person’s condition in this life, while eternal death would picture his condition in the next life.
The difference is in Adam and Eve.
They at the point of sin suffered three deaths.
*Physical, in that they began to die
*Spiritual, in that they became dead spiritually, and
*Eternal, in that at that point they were facing eternity without God.
Sin is costly. Look at the prisons, divorce, war, and all the broken lives all around us today because of sin.
For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: Romans 5:12
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 6:23
Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil. Ecclesiastes 12:13‑14
Only salvation through Jesus Christ can give sinners hope now, and forever. If you don’t know Him, won’t you call upon His name and be saved!
Heavenly Father, how we praise you for the gift of salvation through your dear Son. Our prayer is for the salvation of the lost that they might come to know the love, mercy, and grace of God found in the
Lord Jesus Christ. Amen! Loving the Savior, Preacher
