The Spirit of Man
Man is a spirit, living in a body of flesh. The body when decomposed returns to the dust of the ground from whence it was taken.
Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it. Ecclesiastes 12:7
Man, who is a spirit being, is the offspring of God.
Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device. Acts 17:29
The first man was made by God from the dust of the ground, and then He breathed into man's nostrils the breath of life.
And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. Genesis 2:7
The spirit of man and his earthly body are woven together, that only the physical death of the body will release the spirit from the body.
What is the spirit of man like?
This is difficult to answer, but we can say the spirit of man is like that of God except, not with the same capacity as the Creator. We can see this from the writing of Moses in the book of Genesis.
And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. Genesis 1:27
We will never become a god like our Creator, but we have been made in His likeness by His own choice. Not even the angels were thus made. Because of this, one day we who are saved will be above the holy angels in heaven. Presently we are lower than the angels. Even Jesus was made so at His first coming.
Does the spirit come in sizes?
This is an interesting question concerning the size of the spirit of man. Obviously, the spirit of man cannot be seen or weighed. I have read that some in the past have had a person on scales who was alive and then died and they have seen a slight loss of weight. How true this is, is uncertain. So whether one person's spirit is larger than another's we have no clue in the scriptures, as far as I can find.
When a baby dies, does it go to heaven and be a baby spirit?
Again we have another question that many have often thought about. I have a baby sister who lived only twenty four minutes. Is she a baby spirit in heaven? We know she is not an angel, because that is a different order of spirit beings. But what about my baby sister and countless others who died as an infant or were aborted before birth, are they baby spirits?
Only God knows the answer to that. Until then we must wait and find out when we arrive in heaven with all the other children of God. It must not be too important for us to know or else God would have given us some thought on this.
Is the spirit of man of different colors or nationalities?
We live in this world and the bodies of men are of various shades of color, some having more melanin that others. We are also residing in different countries. These features make us look somewhat different, although we are all alike with the same needs and concerns. When the Lord raises the true believers in Christ all of them will receive their bodies back and we will be recognized as who we were before death. However, our bodies will have undergone a miraculous change that has been prepared for us (our spirit) to live in forever. As to the color of spirits we have no indication, except when God has manifested himself. He has appeared as glorious stones or like a bright light as several verses indicate.
God is a Spirit: John 4:24a I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool: his throne was like the fiery flame, and his wheels as burning fire. Daniel 9:7
And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne. And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald. Revelation 4:2-3
It would seem that a spirit is colorless and only the glory or adornment that clothes it is visible, unless the spirt wishes to be seen.
Does the spirit of a man have more power than another?
We are dealing with those who are saved and whether some have more authority than others in heaven. This is made clear in several scriptures that some believers will be rewarded more in heaven than others because they were more faithful while here upon the earth serving the Lord.
Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. Matthew 6:19-21
Also, I would ask you to read Luke 19:11-17 for even more light on this subject. Of course, there are even more scriptures dealing with this subject if one takes the time to look them up.
Will man who is a spirit have more power than angels?
The only way I can answer that is to say we will be over the angels as I have earlier stated. Does that mean all believers will be over all the angels, or will there be some angels with higher authority than men? I do not know the answer to that only that all the saved will be of a higher order of spirit being than the angels.
Will our power be in relation to our works here as believers?
We have attempted to answer this question and the answer is yes. When we are brought before the judgement seat of Christ to be evaluated for our life works since becoming a Christian it will be determined what our reward will be if we have earned one.
For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is. If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire. 1 Corinthians 3:11-15
Is our mind the mind of our spirit, which is us?
Yes, we have an intelligent mind as a spirit. While we have a brain in our physical body, our brain is not us. Our brain is where our mind resides, or our spirit. This is a great mystery, this thing of our mind and spirit. Even with all the medical knowledge we have today, still little is known concerning the brain and how it functions. But the brain is the tool our mind and spirit uses while we live in our fleshly body. Listen to what the Psalmist said,
For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb. I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them. Psalms 139:13-16
Why do our bodies wear out, but our spirit never does?
Our bodies grow tired and old and eventually they expire. This earthly house is a material and all material things wear out except water as far as I know.
For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2 Corinthians 5:1
For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven: 2 Corinthians 5:2
In the above verses the Apostle Paul discusses his body as an earthly house. Actually, sin is the culprit that brings us down to the dusk of the ground.
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 6:23
On the other hand, we as a spirit do not age. We will forever be young and healthy when we get in spirit, it appears. It is only the flesh that needs rest. Our spirit never sleeps as far as I can learn. Even when our bodies sleep, our spirit is still active.
Why do our bodies die, but our spirit never does?
As we have just stated, our bodies die because we have the sentence of death on them. We are sinners and we choose to sin. Our sin has offended God and because God is holy, He cannot overlook sin because he is a God of justice.
Our spirit does not die or cease to exist because we are eternal spirit creatures now just like God. However, spirit is death in sin until we are made alive unto God. This means we are separated from God. But when we repent of our sin and accept Jesus as our Savior, we are forgiven, and made a new creation or creature. Because of what Christ did for us we have been reconciled to God. That is, He can now accept us because the blood of Jesus has cleansed us from all of our sin, and our sin debt has been paid in full!
Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. 2 Corinthians 5:17
And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, Revelation 1:5
Why do we as a spirit live forever?
Because we as a spirit came from God. We are a spirit God made! Once we did not exist, now that He did create us, we will exist forever somewhere. Those who repent of their sin and trust Jesus as their savior, they will live in heaven with the Lord forever. Those who fail to trust Jesus as their savior will be cast into the lake of fire to be tormented forever because of their sin that was never removed.
And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. Revelation 20:14-15
The above scripture is just one of many that speaks of a place called hell. Jesus himself warned of this place twelve times. Yes, we all will live somewhere forever, and the choice is left up to us. Have you trusted Jesus to be your savior so that you can live in heaven with him, and all the children of God?
Heavenly Father, we pray that those who do not know you will ask you into their hearts today. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen, Preacher
