Sons of God, Prehistoric Men & Locust Spirits
My friends, this month we would like to continue on the line of our last newsletter, DEMONS. I will present to you different views from some Bible teachers to show you how they explain where they think demons come from.  There are some Bible scholars, that are both pro and con, on this subject.  Later, I will you give you the scriptural view, as I see it, and explain what I believe to be true.

“In Genesis 6:1-4, we have the record of fallen angels (sons of God) cohabiting with the daughters of men, thus producing a mongrel race of giants. They were not totally human and they were not totally angelic. The off spring of this mongrel race was a totally different breed of life. In verse 6 of this chapter, the Bible says, “It repented the LORD that He made man on the earth.” Unlike the Mule, these creatures could reproduce and obviously they multiplied rapidly, populating the earth with these mongrel creatures. When the flood came, they all died. The humans of Noah’s day all went into the abode of the dead, but what about the spirits of these giants? The spirits of this mongrel race? Is it possible that they are the disembodied demons that have troubled the earth since the days of Noah?”  Copied

In the book of Job when the sons of God came to present themselves unto God, the Bible says that Satan came also.

Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the Lord. Job 2:1

We can see here the Bible makes the distinction “and Satan came also.” Satan had been upon the earth walking about in it.  The sons of God apparently were the holy angels, and Satan was not called one of the sons of God.

Sons of God is a term used to denote those in a right relationship to God whether it be angels or men.  For example, those of us who are saved are called the sons, or daughters of God.  

Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: 1 John 3:1

So why would angels who are fallen be called sons of God?  It does not seem to be proper to me. In the book of Genesis, some scholars think that the fallen angels cohabited with the daughters of men.

And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.  Genesis 6:1-2

The sons of God were those who were believers from the decedents of Seth who was the godly line from Adam.  Then the Bible says in verse four;

There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown. Genesis 6:4

The daughters of men were the daughters of the line of Cain who were unsaved and did not serve God.  That’s why this is stated in this manner as sons of God and daughters of men.  From this there has come a teaching from some that this was the fallen angels coming down and cohabiting with the daughters of men and they teach this is what produced a mongrel race of giants. But the Bible did not say that.  Look again at the scripture in verse four: It says;

There were giants in the earth in those days;

What days? The days before the so called fallen angels took daughters of men.  Before the fallen angels came down and cohabited with the daughters of men, there were giants already.  Then it continues to say;

Genesis 6:4 - and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

I do not believe these children were from the fallen angels. I believe they were from the righteous sons of God who married the unsaved daughters of men that were the wicked, which God later destroyed with the flood.

In fact, in the first chapter of Genesis, God, in the beginning made a law that “kind” reproduced after its “kind.”  So it is very clear that fallen angels could not have cohabited with women and produced a weird race of creatures who died in the flood, and as some teach, their spirits became what is known as today, demons. Jesus himself gave us some insight on this;

Matthew 22:30  For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven.   

Angels are sexless and they do not reproduce.  As I said before, some scholars think this took place, but I personally and many others like me, do not think this is true.  How can a sexless angel reproduce?  If angels are sexless why did they seek the women only and not the men if they wanted to degrade God’s highest creation?  Would God allow Satan to produce life this way?  If so, it is against the very law God established in kind producing kind.

The book of Jude says this about some of the fallen angels;

And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. Jude 6

Here a group of fallen angels is mentioned who did not like being subjected to God. They left the habitation where God had placed them probably thinking like Satan, they could improve their position by rebelling with him. Now they’re confined in chains of darkness unto the day of judgment.  

Then in the writing of the Apostle Peter he writes;

For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;  2 Peter 2:4

Here are more fallen angels so wicked that when they rebelled they were cast into a place called in the Greek, Tartarus.  They, also, are now in chains to be kept there until the day of judgment when they too will face the judgment of a Holy God.  Today, many are like the fallen angels, refusing to serve their Creator. The scriptures say;

And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.  And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.  Genesis 6:6-7

Notice, God said he would destroy man, animals, the creeping thing and the fowl of the air.  He did not say he would destroy man and a weird creature made from the fallen angels and the daughters of men. So you see here another indication that it was wicked, unsaved man that had grown so corrupt and violent that God determined to destroy with the flood.  Consider verse five where God says because of the wickedness of man and his evil heart is why God brought the flood to drown all life on earth.  There is no mention of some fallen angels and the daughter of men producing some strange monsters between them.  No, it was man who was wicked and evil!

And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. Genesis 6:5

What people fail to acknowledge is the depravity of the heart of men.  Man is a sinful creature and the depths of sin that the heart of man can produce is indescribable. As far back as the beginning of time man became so wicked, and in such a state of rebellion that God finally destroyed all the people living at that time. Everyone except Noah. God spared him, his three sons, and their wives and it is through Noah’s family that people began being produced all over again.

Pre-Adamic Race
Now there is another view which some have adopted and it’s a belief that there was a pre-adamic race that existed before Adam. One writer has written, “In the face of continuing difficulties to explain the spontaneous origin of life on early Earth by evolutionary processes, the scientific community today is pursuing a new theory.  It is being argued that ancient Earth was "seeded" with life from outer space via comets. This effort is being aided by influential writers convincing their readers that sophisticated building complexes have been discovered. These are usually at the bottom of the sea or they are "observatories" such as those at Nazca, Peru.  Most of this is merely speculation, grasping for evidence to support it.  Unfortunately, in the absence of sound teaching, there are Christians who wish to believe all this.”  Copied

As far as the Christian is concerned, a pre-adamic world complements the theory of evolution and relegates to myth
God's creation of planet Earth in six days; thus it denies the fourth commandment Exodus 20:11. The pre-adamic theory also denies that Adam and Eve were the first humans made in the image of God; therefore, the consequences of their Fall and imputed sin would not apply to every human being.  If the Genesis Flood was truly local, it has to be admitted that throughout history there have been many local floods with significant loss of life; therefore, our Creator God has broken His covenant promise with man (see Genesis 9:8-17) many times over!

Thomas Chamlers (1780-1847) in 1814 was the first to purpose that there is a gap between verse 1 and 2 of Genesis chapter one.  Into this gap he places a pre-adamic age, about which the scriptures say nothing.  Some great catastrophe took place, which left the earth "without form and void" or ruined, in which state it remained for as many years as the geologist required.  This speculation has been popularized by the 1917 Scofield Reference Bible. However, the numerous rock layers that are the supposed proof for these ages, were mainly laid down by Noah’s flood.   

In Exodus 20:11 we read of a literal six day creation; For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it. No gaps, not even for one minute, otherwise these would not be six normal days.

Also, in Romans 5:12;

Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

Folks, this is how sin entered the world.  We read that death is the result of Adam’s sin. Because the rock layers display death on a grand scale, they could not have existed before the fall of Adam. There is no direct evidence that the earth is much older than six thousand years. However, we have the direct eyewitness report of God himself that he made everything in six days as stated above.

Then there is an interesting passage of scripture that the Apostle John has written in Revelation chapter nine about horrible, almost demonic looking locusts.  Where did all these locusts come from? Were these creatures also some holy creatures sometime in the past when the other angelic hosts were created that also rebelled against their Creator, God? We just don’t know all what God has done outside the pages of the Holy Scriptures.  Maybe, in some future Bible class in heaven we will be taught even more of the greatness, wisdom and power of our Heavenly Father.  I have read that some writers think these weird creatures are residing in what we often call hell today which is actually the same place where the rich man of Luke sixteen was tormented in the flames. Maybe, they were created to torture the wicked in hell, who knows. We know there is going to be degrees of suffering in hell, according to how wickedly men have lived.  But in the following passage we see how their looks alone, and with the power they have to cause pain, is frightening.

And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit.  And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit.  And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power. And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads.  And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man.  And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them.  And the shapes of the locusts were like unto horses prepared unto battle; and on their heads were as it were And the shapes of the locusts were like unto horses prepared unto battle; and on their heads were as it were crowns like gold, and their faces were as the faces of men.  And they had hair as the hair of women, and their teeth were as the teeth of lions.  And they had breastplates, as it were breastplates of iron; and the sound of their wings was as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battle.  And they had tails like unto scorpions, and there were stings in their tails: and their power was to hurt men five months.  And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon. Revelation 9:1-11

Folks, how would you like to be around when this happens?  It is going to happen one day after all the true Christians have been raptured out to be with the Lord.  Then, after the rapture the seven year tribulation will occur and produce the most horrible time that has ever been, Jesus said this! Things will end up being the worst times that have ever been, as what is described in that last scripture, Revelation 9:1-11.

So the debate goes on between those who think demons are the spirits of a pre-adamic race, or the mixture of fallen angels marrying the daughters of men, then producing weird looking people.  But, myself and many others like me believe demons are evil spirits that Satan uses in his war against the souls of men.  What they were originally is not known, but surely they were not part angel and part man as some propose. Apparently, they were some kind of angelic creatures who rebelled with Satan.

My friend, men do not need to force the scriptures to say what they want them to say.  The Bible is a history of God’s dealing with the present human family and not some unrelated theories of a past creation that sounds fanatical.  I hope this study will get you interested enough to further search the scriptures for truth. Yet, I admit the mysteries of God are still many.

The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.  Deuteronomy 29:29

In closing, let us thank God for providing a Savior to pay for our sin. One day I believe everyone will wish they had trusted him as their Savior. May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with all, in Jesus name I pray. Amen, Preacher
